self help 101
When life challenges us, our emotions can become overwhelming, making it difficult to make the choices that are conducive for our goals. Here is a list of 10 strategies that can help quiet the mind, making us feel more in control of our thoughts and bodies as we step forward!
Breathe…
Taking deep breaths can slow down your heart rate and remind your body that it is safe.
Try writing down some affirmations…
Write down words of encouragement that give you reassurance. Give yourself the grace, patience, and kindness you would provide a friend, loved one, or child.
1
Don’t get stuck in the what ifs…
When we catastrophize, it may make our problems seem impossible. Instead, take a moment to look at the bigger picture. Remind yourself of all the times you have persevered and made it through challenges, big and small!
2
Stay in the present moment…
Use your senses to connect to the space around you. Try counting 5 things you see, 4 things you hear, 3 things you feel, 2 things you smell, and 1 thing you can taste.
Don’t fight the emotion…
Our emotions communicate what we need, so listen to your body and brainstorm healthy ways to comfort and care for yourself.
Remember nutrition…
When we are stressed, we may forget to eat well or drink enough water. Make sure you are staying hydrated and providing your body with the fuel it needs to function.
Prioritize sleep and rest…
Our body and mind needs rest to repair. Check in with yourself to make sure you are getting enough rest.
Movement matters…
Our bodies are meant to move. Go outside and take a ten minute walk or do some light stretching. This is a great way to release negative energy.
Try making a list…
Sometimes, identifying first steps can be the hardest part! It can be helpful to write out a list of what needs to be done, so you can visualize what you are dealing with.
Connect with what you love…
Allow yourself to self-soothe, which can look like listening to music, reading a book, or watching an uplifting movie. You are worthy of space and time!
